Just Starting or Hit the Wall?

The show isn't just for experienced tiers or fly fishermen. If you want to try your hand at tying your first fly and get some excellent free tuition come along. This year we have a competition for beginners and a Clinic for novice and expert alike.

Fly Tying Clinic

This year is the third of this popular feature, the Fly Tying Clinic. Some of our best fly tyers; Ian McKenzie, Steve Carew, Wendy Gibson, Chris Reeves, Mauro Raspini and Frederico Renzie have been on hand to solve your particular tying problems or just answer your questions. Normally these tyers would feature on Tyers Row but all feel they could achieve just that bit more by giving their time over to those of us that can make use of it. So if that whip finishing tool is languishing at the bottom of your tying kit or you can't master a parachute post here's your chance to get free help from the experts. We will publish this years clinic experts once confirmed.

The Fly Dressers Guild

will also be on hand to get you started, come and tie your first fly with them! It will only take 15 minutes. In common with the aims and objectives of the FDG the whole idea is to encourage and promote fly tying whether that is for fishing, competition or just the sheer pleasure of tying. With this in mind FlyBuyer is sponsoring an informal competition for all newcomers to the art of fly tying.

So, please stop by the stand for a chat and an update on our activities.

The Guild is the largest fly tying club in the world. Founded in 1967 in Hampshire by Don Haynes with a group of like minded fly fishers the guild has grown to a membership of over 2000 with 50 branches across the United Kingdom. The membership extends to Japan, Australia, Brazil and the United States of America as well as most European countries.

The mission of the Flydressers’ Guild is to promote and extol the skills and benefits of tying your own flies. Most of the branches in the UK run tying classes where complete novices are taught the basics of fly tying, usually going home after the first lesson with a fly they have tied which will catch fish.

All aspect of fly tying are encompassed, be it dry fly specimens for chalk streams or monster lures for Bonefish and Tarpon. Pike fly fishing is becoming an important aspect of some members as well as flies for Bass and Pollack.

The Guild publishes a full colour quarterly magazine dedicated to fly tying and members can benefit from third party insurance, discounts from trade members and access to 2000 other fly tiers.

As the Guild is dedicated to teaching fly tying our presence at the BFFI is principally to get new comers started on the road to skilful fly tying. There will be on hand a number of members only too willing to help you get started.

Full details of how to join, special offers and all of the news can be found on the web site www.the-fdg.org or contact any member on the teaching stand at the show.
